Theatrics led the way as I sat down with long time painter Del-Bourree Bach. His story is layered and built up in-and-around creative disciplines. Bouncing from one school to the next, between various arts programs and teachers, Del ultimately considers himself a self-taught artist. He spent time as an illustrator and musical performer among other vocations, but ultimately found his life’s work as painter.
Del has been working at the game of artist for several decades, honing his craft into a successful business. “It’s the 3-D’s, Desire, Discipline, and Deadlines”. To be successful in this field, the first step is making good art. Del has this part down thanks to his work ethic built on the concept of the 3-D’s. He is the full artists package, with a streaming work flow, his name is know by many dealers, collectors and other artists. Making connections and applying for shows without fear of failure, Del pushed through the often uncomfortable phase of networking in your field. Though it's clear when you meet Del in person how his show biz days give him a leg up charming any audience. Never known for being shy, Del has made a point of getting to know his patrons and gallery dealers. “Personality counts” says Del, attributing his outgoing and gestural language to his time in the preforming arts. Then again “so do deadlines” alternately thanking his time as an illustrator when a timely product made the difference between keeping a client or losing the next gig.
Circling back to the present, Del and I find ourselves sitting and gazing at his painting of rippling water with two loan sea shells in the bottom right corner. Since I had first discovered his work, I wanted to ask him about his theme surrounding the solitary figure in many of his works. His response was a quitter answer than most as he reflected on the peacefulness, serenity and necessary breathing room commanded though his compositions. After many years living in New York City, he became acutely aware of the “horizon deprivation” inflicted by the massive buildings in every direction. Now living a quieter life in the suburbs of CT, Del is able to spend ample time in his studio doing what he enjoys most.
You can find Del Bourree Bach’s work at Susan Powell Fine Art Gallery and many others across the country. He’s also only a click away at www.del-bourreebach.com.
