A Frame Story

A Frame Story

A “frame story” is a literary technique that tells a story within a story.  For example, Forrest Gump. The narration of the story is told from Forrest’s point of view while sitting on the bench in the park. The end of the movie is in “present” time, when Forrest leaves the bench to go find Jenny.  Believe it or not, Wholesale Frame follows a similar model.  Think of us a Forrest, telling the story of each unique moulding, and completing the narrative with a custom join or fit.

Before the long lengths of moulding ever arrive at our loading dock at 170 Research Parkway, they already have a full life’s tale. Each length has been harvested, cut, treated, finished, dried, packaged and shipped. This is no small feat and takes many hands, machines, and working hours to produce the quality and craftsmanship that we value. As is typical in most facets of commerce, you get what you pay for.  The quality of wood, consistency, and finish make all the difference in delivering a reliable product.  Some of the brands we trust most are Larson-Juhl, Roma, Fotiou, and Gryphon.  Each manufacturer has their own techniques and processes to make their moldings’ desirable to you!

In a quest to dig a little deeper, I found many videos on the production process that both impressed and made me appreciate all that goes into the product. Many are American made, supporting environmental stewardship with an eye on sustainable practices.  At the Larson Jhul factory in Wisconsin, they recycle wood chips for use in livestock bedding, sawdust for cement and metal scraps are sent to an aluminum recycling facility.  This does come at a cost to the consumer, but it is another good reason to love your frames and treat them with care.  They are designed to house your art, through protecting and enhancing the work. Curb appeal matters and can make a difference in the overall quality and presentation. With that said, check out these YouTube videos if you’re interested in learning more about the process of making a mould.

Francis Hines lived in Connecticut for periods of time, even working as chief commercial artist at the iconic G. Fox & Co in Hartford during its prime. However, Hines was a New York artist through and through.  It’s where he summoned his energy and creative spirit. He was extremely prolific and although recognized at times for his work, he was not after the fame or glory.

Back to Watercolor and the Basics

If only for a little while, my advice is to switch to a new medium, find a new surface to work on, or just change it up. Find what works for you! Since I know many out there are already working in watercolor, find something else to challenge your routine. Maybe it’s a giant marker, a hunk of charcoal, or fresh pastels, but ultimately a new material will force you to learn a new trick or two.
